I was horrified watching this video that I stumbled upon on Facebook. It is a video of a mother who drives to the grocery with her baby. For unknown reason, she leaves her infant in the car under the scorching heat of the summer sun and continues with her shopping, not even thinking of going back to the car to check her baby. It was like everything is normal. She's confident that the baby is in perfect condition until an unexpected thing happened.
I am a mother of a 4 year old girl and another baby due next month. As a parent, I think I can never do what she did. Not even in my imagination! I mean, how could you leave your child alone in the car like that? Unless you are out of your mind, you know it is not safe to put your baby in that situation. Okay, she's using a seat belt but no air-conditioning and no accompaniment of an adult?
After watching the video, I googled and realized that this thing happens a lot in the western countries. The usual scenario is, parents will intentionally leave their kids or pet in the car, not knowing that the weather could hurt them, or worse, take their lives. Most of these kids suffer from heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration.
As parents, it is important that we take proper precaution when driving with kids. Make sure they are safe in the back seat, buckled up and doors locked before starting the engine. Take the responsibility of checking your car if there's anyone left in there before you go. Never let a child stay alone in a parked vehicle, not even a minute or two.
Recently, there were two kids in the news found dead in a parked car somewhere in Taguig. Same kids were reported missing 4 months before. I do not know if there's any foul-play, but the report says they were locked up and probably died of dehydration and exhaustion. Whatever is the reason behind the death of those kids, I think it all goes down to parental responsibility. Lesson learned: always keep an eye on your children.
