Question From A Reader: How to Spot a Fake Lacoste Bag?

I do receive emails from my readers from time to time. Most of them I just answer through an email or Facebook message. This time, I am sharing to you a message which I got 10 days ago.

Good day Ma'am.
I was wondering if you could help me distinguish fake Lacoste bags from real ones. I happen to have found a Lacoste bag here at home, but I can't seem to decipher whether it's real or not. Can you please help me?
Thank you and God bless :)

This letter came from Miss A. Thank you so much for this letter Miss A. Because of too much replica and fake bags out there, I know it's sometimes a little hard to tell which one is real and which one is not. In the Philippines, there are several stores that sell "class A" designer bags like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Juicy Couture, Chanel, Lacoste, and even Hermes. This is why I decided to post your question here together with my answer, so the rest of my reader will be able to read it too.

Hamptons Terrycloth Shoulder Bag in Angel Blue - Regular Price $185

Okay honestly, I don't have a Lacoste item in my closet and nothing fake can be found in our house as well. The only Lacoste thing that I saw is hubby's classic polo in blue. So, to help Miss A with her problem, I was in SM Megamall today to visit a Lacoste store and to talk to someone who knows the brand so much better than me.

How To Spot A Fake Lacoste Bag

1. Logo - Leather bags have a square logo that reads "Lacoste Paris". If the bag is made of PVC, it should display the signature crocodile symbol in a typical green color. Bags made of nylon or cotton canvas may have a different crocodile color. However, the claws, teeth, and the spiky back of the crocodile must be all obvious when checked closely. Remember the bag is probably fake when the crocodile logo is not emrbroidered and sewn well or if the square logo is not properly attached.

2. Material - Lacoste bags are durable because they are made of quality materials. They are usually available in PVC, leather, or cotton canvas. They have a very good finish, displaying an even and secured stitching. On the other hand, fake bags are made of thin material, low quality zippers, or buckles. Plus, they are poorly stitched.

3. Design - Lacoste comes up with a new design and collection every season. For example, their newest release is R. George bags and pouches in military color. Anyhow, they have typical designs like the casual PVC and canvas bags that are usually available in bright purple, pink, orange, blue, and yellow. Visit the website to get update with their latest designs.

4. Store - Where did you buy your Lacoste bag? Remember, to get the real thing, you should go to a Lacoste store, website or an authorized retailer.

5. Price - Lacoste is a high-end brand. There is no way that you can get an authentic Lacoste bag from a bazaar price of $35! Besides, $35 is not a price for a Lacoste bag, but a price for pouch only. Again, visit the website to get the prices of the current designs.

That's all for the tips. I had fun searching for an answer to Miss A's question, not to mention that I learned from it too. So ladies, if you have a question for me and you think I can answer them, just send it to mrskolca@gmail.com. Until next time! :D

  2. I both a "lacoste overrun" in an online site about 2 days ago, yesterday i noticed that the logo is not as good as you were sayinh. The seller insisted that it is overrun but im not convinced that it is. I said that it is fake and not overrun. Is it possible that overruns have bad logos that are very obvious? I believe that overruns are excess of the factory have just slight factory defects that are slightly noticeable. Just wanted to know if im right or he seller is a bogus. Thanks

    1. I think you got a fake Lacoste bag and not "overrun". From what I know, not all overruns have factory defect. For example, client X orders 10K Lacoste bags. Factory produces 12K of them. From 12K, they will carefully select 10K for delivery and whatever is left will be considered overrun.

Okay, if your bag is really overrun like what they say, there is a chance for it to have a little problem with basic stitching on the strap or body, but never to have a logo which is obviously looking fake. Lacoste logos are usually embroidered on the material using high quality embroidery machines so expect them to be precise, no thread breaks whatsoever.

  3. It was my first time to buy a Lacoste bag and was very disappointed. Me and hubby own Lacoste polo shirts bought here and abroad and we are satisfied with the quality. But the bag I bought here has quality issue. I also found out that the bag is Made in China. I bought it at Lacoste Megamall. I contacted Lacoste France. They reply immediately. i was told they'll forward my concern to the appropria

    1. Hi! Sadly, almost everything is made in China these days including brands like Longchamp, Coach, Michael Kors, Lacoste, etc. I supposed there are still Lacoste products that are made in France so you carefully pick the item that you're going to buy. Happy shopping! :)

    1. No. If something is made in China, it doesn't automatically mean it's fake.

I shopped for a Longchamp tote at an authorized dealer here in PH and they sell both made in China and made in France Longchamp bags. Also, my Michael Kors travel tote is made in China but it was bought at Macy's in US so it's not fake.

  6. Not all made in China is fake since there are also factories there like longchamp etc., BUT better to stay away from made in China products.

  7. I am a lacoste bag collector and i talked to several manufacturers. Most of foreign companies including lacoste and longchamp have their factories and labor force in china due to inexpensive human labor fee. Even iphone right now was made in china but 100% authentic. China made isn't always fake.

  8. I am a certified lacoste bag collector and had confirmed with several authentic manufacturers. Most of the bags right now are made in china --- NOT FAKE BAGS. It's because foreign companies set up their factories in china due to cheap human workforce.
